Superior Uniform Group donates scrubs for the Smiles for Everyone Foundation visit to Kumasi, Ghana

Six Smile Brands-affiliated dentists and six company leaders visited an orphanage and five schools in Kumasi, Ghana, in western Africa. Working with local oral surgeon, Dr. Esther Mark, and a team of dental assistants, this group provided treatment to over 900 patients in six days. The scrubs for this undertaking were generously donated by Superior Uniform Group.

One of the affiliated dentists was Dr. Robert Crim, formerly a lead dentist and PC Owner in Tampa, Florida. Recently Dr. Crim, who is now Smile Brands’ Chief Dental Officer, spent a week in Kumasi as the International Ambassador to Ghana for the Smiles for Everyone Foundation (SFEF).

Building Bonds to Help those in Need
“Our goals for this trip were to establish stronger bonds with the local dental school and the king’s foundation and create opportunities for them to better support Dr. Mark, who is the clinical director for the SFEF Outpost,” says Dr. Crim. Dr. Mark has been a practicing dental surgeon for 24 years and is the principal dental surgeon at Ghana Health Service. She also has 15 years’ experience in community health projects, working with other international charities.

“She has a passion for helping people in need,” says Dr. Crim, “and regularly organizes outreach programs for them. There’s no denying the cultural restrictions on women there have made her efforts challenging, but I believe we improved those relationships with this recent visit.”

Packing a Lot into a Week
In spite of arriving a day late due to snowstorms in New York, during his week in Ghana, Dr. Crim was able to:

  • Provide training for local dental officers in
  • Fissure sealants
  • New dental technology
  • Posterior composite dentistry
  • Rotary endodontics
  • Invisalign technology
  • Conduct a local outreach event that included
  • Providing sealants to nearly 50 children
  • Giving dental school students the opportunity to observe Dr. Crim’s technique and do hands-on work as well
  • Meet with Dr. Francis Adu-Ababio, dean of the dental school at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)
  • Meet with Dr. Thomas Agyarko-Poku, Executive Director of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II (King of Ghana) Charity Foundation

“Crystal [Strait, Manager of SFE Foundation] and I have already mapped out our strategy for helping the dental school and its students,” notes Dr. Crim. “The key to the success of all the SFEF Outposts is to have enthusiastic local providers who understand that part of the privilege of becoming a doctor is the opportunity to help those less fortunate than ourselves.”
