Materials Manager — Fabric/Textiles

POSITION OVERVIEW

As the Materials Manager, you will be responsible for coordinating and managing all relevant fabric and trim development to ensure the highest quality and performance characteristics that align with brand standards. This will include developing our own proprietary materials, working with the vendors to maintain accurate libraries of fabric/trim reference in tandem with ensuring our standardized high-quality and brand compliance requirements are followed. You will stay abreast of trends and materials innovation and work alongside the Design department to bring innovative ideas to the market segments.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the fabric and trim development process from ideation to final manufacturing and execution.
  • Work cross-functionally with the Design, Production, Merchandising, and Quality Control teams in meeting aesthetic, timing, cost and testing parameters related to all fabrics and trims.
  • Identify new opportunities by recognizing market and consumer trends, new technology, and competitor products to formulate new material ideas along with the Product Development and Design team to help bring them to market.
  • Serve as the initial point person for new product and material requests.
  • Consult with Design team regarding product attributes, suitability for application, services, and pricing needed for the development.
  • Order and track sample fabrics and trims to be used for internal prototyping as well as Salesmen sample development oversees.
  • Work with the Procurement and Production teams to ensure appropriate material pricing, MOQs, and development lead times.
  • Review bulk dye lots for approval adhering to strict shade tolerances. Communicate any approvals or revisions deemed necessary to the appropriate agent or mill.
  • Maintain organized records of fabrics developed, lab dips, and dye lots per brand category.
  • Follow up with agents and vendors to ensure on-time scheduling and delivery of materials to various production facilities by maintaining fabric and materials WIP reports.
  • Work with agents, mills, and Design to oversee quality of all bulk materials, inclusive of, but not limited to construction, finishing, hand feel, color accuracy, print and fiber content.
  • Communicate daily with internal teams (Merchandising, Design, Production, QC, etc.) and external partners (vendors & factories) to troubleshoot and resolve issues quickly.
  • Clarify and reinforce sampling needs, Quality Assurance standards, and development of policies/procedures for the agents & factories and for new internal and international employees.
  • Interact collaboratively with Sourcing, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Supply Chain, and other internal and international departments to complete assigned materials development within the allotted timelines.
  • Assist with the documentation and validation of liabilities, excess fabric disposal and sampling charges.
  • Communicate daily with global vendors, agent representatives and company employees outside the U.S.A.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Textile Science or related field required (industrial, commercial, or product design)
  • 5+ years of experience working with textile and product development preferred
  • Experience with domestic and overseas vendors required
  • Experience with technical fabrics, woven, and blended fabrics required
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally
  • Experience using DataColor machine and ability to visually vet through shade bands required
  • Experience and knowledge of fabric and material testing required
  • MS Office and Outlook proficiency
